[10/20/20] [Hatch!] By Default, Flash Projects from Scratch 2 will be Opened/Edited in new Scratch 3 Editor as of 10/28/2020

If you have created some projects using the old Flash version Hatch editor (Scratch 2), your projects will be opened by default in the new HTML editor as of 10/28/2020. The main reason this is happening is due to fact that Flash support will be removed in all major web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc) at the end of this year. To help you continue to access your Flash version of Hatch! projects and keep editing them, we will make this update officially as of 10/28/2020.

How do I know the editor version my project is using?

You can identify the editor version of a project by the following method:

First, go to the "My Projects" page:

If the project is using the new "html5" editor, you can find a label (highlighted by blue arrow) next to the "edit" button at the bottom. If the project is using the old Flash version editor, the label will not be displayed.

New editor (left), Flash version editor (right)

What would happen on 10/28/2020?

After 10/28/2020, when you click the "Edit Code Blocks" button for your old Flash version project, the project will be opened in the new html5 editor automatically, and you will not be able to open and edit it in the old Flash editor anymore.

The new editor looks like this ⬇️

What do you need to do?

The update will be done automatically on OYOclass servers. You don't need to do anything! 😺But if you have not used the new editor, or have avoided it, we recommend that you learn about it through our courses to make sure you get familiar with it. Google engineers collaborated with Scratch@MIT engineers to map the original Scratch language to the open source Blockly language used in the Scratch 3 editor. The translation has some differences, and it always takes some time to get familiar with changes, but the power of the original Scratch language remains for anyone to use in their Hatch! app dev projects!

Also, if you want to download your old Flash version projects for some reason, you could go to "My Projects" to find the project, then click the "Download Project" in the "Edit" dropdown before 10/28/2020.

Happy Hatching!
